Why You Should Go to Church (even if you don’t feel like it)

Galatians 6:2

There is a great value that comes with working with others. Human beings are social creatures and when we put our heads together we can accomplish great things. Going to church (fellowshiping with other believers) is important because God expects us to work together to achieve the gospel commission’s goal (Matthew 28:19-20).

Not only does God expect us to work with other believers but he expects us to bear each other’s burdens.

“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”

Galatians 6:2

If we’re being honest, trying to live a Christian life is oftentimes challenging. God has set up the church so we can share our experiences with others and become renewed to continue in our Christian journey.

So here are Three reasons why you go to church (even if you don’t feel like it)

1. The need for Companionship

What is companionship and why do we need it? God created us in his image. That’s a lot to think about. God created us like Him with the ability to care, to love and to understand. He created us for his companionship and therefore we have the desire to have companionship with others.

In Genesis 1: 26-27, we get a glimpse of God’s creative process.

(26) And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…(27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 1:26-27

In Genesis 3:8, amid the story about the fall of man, we see something very interesting.

“And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.”

Genesis 3:8

Wow! God was walking in the garden? We can assume that this was not a one-off occasion, but that God would usually come to the garden to meet with Adam and Eve and chat with them. In other words, God wanted companionship with his creation.

When Christ came to earth, He chose 12 disciples, and these 12 men initially formed a church. Christ’s example shows us that we are not meant to walk this Christian journey alone. That’s why finding the right church and attending services can be a pivotal aspect of the Christian experience.

2. Share God’s Love with Others

We know from Genesis chapter 2 that God created Eve because it was not good for man to be alone. God said it’s a bad thing for humans to be alone. Amazing! God doesn’t want us to be lonely, He wants us to enjoy the company of others. He has placed within us a need for companionship with Him and with others.

God has provided us with a church. No, not just a physical church, but anyone who is a believer in Christ. When we communicate with other believers and share our experiences, we strengthen each other and therefore we strengthen the body of Christ.

I was never a social butterfly. I preferred to stay by myself, because ‘I was all the company I needed.’ Sometimes I would ask God to place me on a mountain by myself; it would just be Him and I, and I would be happy.  “People are just so annoying.” I thought. But as I grew older, I began to understand why social interactions are important. I learned to appreciate the company of others and see the benefit of fellowshipping with others at church.

With the age of the internet, it’s really easy to sit at home and still communicate with others. But imagine that there was no internet; imagine you had no one else around you for the rest of your life. Sounds pretty lonely huh? God has created us as social beings. He wants us to have a relationship with him and to share the love of Jesus with others.

3. Unity in the Body of Christ

In Genesis 11, we read about the tower of Babel. There are some important points to note about this story.

  1. The people wanted to be their own gods. They wanted to be in control of their own destiny.
  2. They knew the testimony of Noah but they refused to accept God’s favor.
  3. They all had one language and therefore it was easy for them to work together and effectively communicate. “And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.” Genesis 11:1
  4. They all had one goal. “And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” Genesis 11:4

The tower of Babel is a classic story of a group of people working together to achieve a common goal. Even though this goal was not of God’s will, we can still say that these people were united.

God has given mankind the power of unity as can be seen from this story.

And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

Genesis 11:6

Building the Body of Christ

If ungodly people can build a tower reaching heaven, how much more can we Christians do if we are united in Christ?

God has given each of us a spiritual gift or talent for the edification and uplifting of the church.

And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:28
1 Corinthians 12:28

When we put all the parts of the body of Christ together, there is nothing that we can’t accomplish. The idea of attending church is not to just sit there and listen to a sermon but to use your talents and gifts to share God’s love and spread the gospel.

There is power in unity. In Acts 2:1 on the day of Pentecost the apostles were all in one accord, “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.” They were united in Christ and that same day three thousand souls were baptized (Acts 2:41). Three thousand people in one day!

If you read the entire story of the tower of Babel, you’ll see that God was not pleased with their tower building and he confused their tongues.

Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

Genesis 11:7

There is a very important lesson here: There is no unity in confusion.

We are members of the body of Christ; we become unified when we pray together, study God’s word together and work together to share the gospel. We cannot do this on our own.

Prayer for Today:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for setting up the church. I pray for the body of Christ all over the world. I pray that we become unified so we can spread the good news of Christ.

Amen.
